ENTER THE ENERGY CHAMBER
The South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce is now officially the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago after its membership voted unanimously for the name change at an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on March 17th 2010 at Plipdeco House, Orinoco Drive, Point Lisas.
The change in name comes about to reflect the evolution of the Chamber over the past few years and the fact that the Energy Chamber's membership of 270 companies comes from across Trinidad and Tobago and beyond. The break-down is as follows:
• 22% - Point Lisas and environs,
• 30 % - Port-of-Spain and environs,
• 34 % - San Fernando and environs,
• 9 % - Point Fortin and the southwest peninsula,
• 3 % - Arima and environs, and
• 3% - international members (United States, Canada and Suriname).
Speaking at the EGM, Charles Percy, President of the Energy Chamber, explained that:
"The geographical description "south Trinidad" no longer accurately reflects our membership and above all else this is a membership organisation representing the needs of our members.
The vast majority of our members are in the energy sector and the vast majority of those who are not directly in the sector - such as the banks, law firms or accounting firms - still look to us primarily for their energy sector business.
For many years the strategic focus of the Chamber has been on the energy sector and related sectors of the economy. This strategic direction has been re-affirmed at successive Annual General Meetings and by successive Councils.
The Chamber is also recognised by stakeholders across Trinidad & Tobago, including the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, as being the representative association for the energy sector."
The decision of the Council to change the name of the Chamber to the Energy Chamber was first announced by Charles Percy at the Trinidad & Tobago Energy Conference on 25th January 2010. The EGM marked a chance for the membership of the Chamber to either accept or reject that decision of the Council. The membership unanimously accepted the decision.
